Don’t miss the opportunity to explore Somerset Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves after dark and see them in a whole new light!
- What – Four biofluorescent night walks
- When – Saturday 26th October
- Where – Two walks at Great Breach Wood Nature Reserve and two walks at Langford Heathfield Nature Reserve
- Who – All ages (earlier sessions are running for younger families with children under 16 years old)
Join Somerset Wildlife Trust for an extraordinary adventure to explore the fascinating world of biofluorescence, a unique phenomenon where certain living organisms emit light in different colours.
Led by expert David Atthowe, Biofluorescent Nature Guide and Director at Reveal Nature, participants will have the chance to walk through a nature reserve after dark and discover biofluorescence up close. From fungi to insects and plants, individuals will encounter a diverse array of species in their natural habitat that come alive with vibrant hues under UV light.
Please come prepared with warm clothing as the pace of the walk is slow – sturdy shoes are recommended (as the terrain is uneven and muddy) and full-length trousers (to avoid stinging nettles). Safety glasses and UV torches will be provided.
Bryony Slaymaker, Wilder Communities Manager at Somerset Wildlife Trust, says:
“Biofluorescence is fascinating – ultraviolet light has wavelengths shorter than those detectable by the human eye, but UV torches bring it into our vision. We’re thrilled that we can offer people the chance to experience this enchanting phenomenon firsthand, and these walks are sure to make for an unforgettable experience.”
